Tutorials: Nighttime vs. Daytime Look

The first look I’ll be going for is the dark smoky eye look. This look is great for a romantic date night, clubbing, or going out to parties! If you want to go for that dark sultry feel, this is the look for you!

LOOK #1: Smokey Eye

1. Lightly spritz your face using a facial setting spray. This mist helps your foundation stick to your face and absorbs oil so your foundation goes on smoothly. Spray this a few times all over your face and you’re good to go!

2. Prime your face using makeup primers. Not only does this help your foundation stay on your face for a long period of time, but it cancels out redness, absorbs oil, and reduces the appearance of pores. This step is important to making sure your foundation looks flawless all day long. Put the primer on areas you have generally larger pores and have more oil production.

3. Next, use the foundation of your choice and spread a thin layer on your face. This way you use less product and you don’t look too “caked on”. After you spread the foundation on your face, blend using a dampened sponge.

4. Hide your pimples and redness using concealer. Dab a small amount on the areas where you need and blend with a sponge.

5. Next, is highlighting my (favorite part of the process). Using a concealer, about two shades lighter than your own skin tone, create two triangles underneath your eyes, put a little on your forehead, down the bridge of the nose, cupid’s bow, and chin. Not only does this cover your dark circles, making you look more awake, but also accentuates the raised areas of the face. Blend with a beauty blender so you don’t have any harsh lines!

6. Time to bake! And no, I’m not talking about making cakes. This technique is yet another way to make sure your face is oil-free and poreless. Dip your beauty blender in translucent setting powder and coat a generous amount on the areas you highlighted. Let the powder sit for about 5-10 minutes and then slightly dust off with another brush.

7. While we let the powder sit on our faces, let’s move on to eyebrows. First come out your brows. Then dip your eyebrow brush into brow pomade and slightly outline the end of your eyebrows and slightly fill in the rest of your brows with LIGHT strokes. A little goes a long way with brow pomade so make sure you use a small amount. After, set with brow gel so your eyebrows stay in place all day.

8. Next is contouring! Contouring is where you use dark shades to define and outline certain features of the face you want. For this look, use the dark gray powder to outline your cheek bones, chin, and forehead. After, use bronzer on top of the areas you just contoured to achieve a more sun-kissed look.

9. Now add blush, we need to look alive out there!

10. Eyelid primer prevents your eyeshadow from creasing and helps it last all night long. Blend gently with your ring finger.

11. Onto Eyeshadow using the Tartlette Palette

Take the any dark color and concentrate on the outer portion of the lids.

Use a flat brush to pick up the gray shade and pack all over the lid!

12. Eyeliner! Draw a line from your eyelid to the end of your eyebrow. Connect the end of the line back to your eyelid making a triangle. This triangle ends up being a fancy winged eyeliner.

13. Although you can skip this step and use mascara, I used falsies because they are just much more dramatic. Put glue on the adhesive of the lashes and blow on it to make the glue a little tacky. Put as the lash as close to the lash line as possible making sure both ends are securely attached.

14.Lipstick you know the drill!

15. Highlight your face with a fluffy brush to make your face look like its glowing. Put the highlighter along your cheekbones, generally the area where the light hits your face. Dab a little on the tip of your nose and on your cupid’s bow.

This is the finished look! Wear this for a nice evening, smokey look for any event. Whether it be a fancy dinner date, or maybe even a trip to the grocery store, makeup is meant to be fun, so do whatever makes you feel confident!

Look #2: Natural Everyday Makeup Look

The second look is the “Oh sh*t I just woke up its 7:35 and I have an 8am at Lomo!” Just kidding, but seriously! This look takes only about 5 minutes to do and is perfect if you want to just look awake, natural, and fresh in the morning. All these products are under 10$ and can be found at the drugstore. So, if you’re a girl on a budget, check this out!

  1.  Use a BB cream and apply all over the face with CLEAN hands and or use a sponge. BB cream is perfect for everyday use because it has SPF which protects your face from sun damage. It’s also less cake than foundation and it feels lighter on the skin.

3. After setting your entire face w/ translucent powder to make sure your makeup stays in place. Pick up a tapered, fluffy brush and bronze around the areas where you would usually contour. This helps your face look less flat and more define while also giving you a sun kissed look.

The 10 Commandments of Cosmetics

Here are the 10 commandments of cosmetics! Of course, all of these are just recommendations and tips for makeup wearers. Take them as you please, just remember to have fun and feel beautiful while you get ready!

1. Thou shall blend blend blend.

Whether it be eyeshadow, bronzer or foundation, you must always blend out your makeup!! No one wants to see too harsh lines and defined colors on your face like a cartoon character.

giphy

2. Thou shall ALWAYS use your neck to find the right color of your foundation

Despite popular belief, when you’re at the makeup store and you’re trying to find a new foundation, always match the color to your neck. For me, my face is naturally lighter than the rest of my body due to exfoliation, acne medication, and sunscreen. Although this may not be the same for you, the best bet to getting the EXACT color foundation is matching to your neck. Click the GIF to watch Saldana’s

3. Thou shall NOT overdraw in your eyebrows.

When you fill in your eyebrows, make sure you use a light hand and small strokes. This way you’ll achieve a much more natural look. Click the GIF to get more make up Dos and Donts.

4. Thou shall always clean your brushes.

You should clean your makeup brushes at least once every two weeks according to Allure Magazine. Click on the GIF to watch youtube makeup artist Nicole Guerrero teach you how to clean makeup brushes.

giphy-7.gif

5. Thou shall not overdraw your lips.

It’s okay to overdraw them a little bit to make them appear plumper, but doing too much is gonna make you look like Miranda sings.

giphy.gif

6. Thou shall always moisturize your face before you apply makeup

Even if you have oily skin, make sure you moisturize. If you don’t apply moisturizer, your face will compensate and overproduce oil.

giphy-2.gif

7. Thou shall not put too much blush

Start by applying small amounts to build up the color. Don’t put directly on the apples of the cheeks. Blend from the edge off your face towards the apples instead.

giphy-4.gif
Shaaanxo

8. Thou shall always prime your face.

If you don’t prime your face, your makeup won’t last as long as you would want it to!

giphy-1.gif

9. Thou shall always remove your makeup before you sleep.

The worst sight to wake up to in the morning is seeing all your makeup on your pillow. It’s also definitely not healthy for your skin. Check this Huffington Post to see why dermatologists say sleeping with makeup on is not so great for your skin!

10. Thou shall have fun with makeup!

Should be self-explanatory, but in a world full of makeup shamers, it’s best to remember that you do makeup for YOURSELF and for no one else.

Foundation for your Skin Type 101

At the heart of everything you do everyone starts with the basics- or in this case- foundation!

Have you ever wondered why different brands market different types of foundation? Well, it is because people have different types of skin types. Of the many skin types that there are the three main skin types I will be talking about are oily and dry.

Oily Skin:

As an 18 year old girl, having oily skin is tough to manage. I find it extremely disgusting when I would see my face shine like the top of the Chrysler Building.  Thankfully, there are certain products that I like to use that help control my oily skin.

For oily skin, it is a MUST to prime your face. Primers are formulations that you put on your face before putting on your foundation that even out your pores and allow for your foundation to stick to your face and last even longer. The places where people get the most oily, including myself, are the forehead chin cheeks and nose area, or the T- Zone. In light of this, I concentrate the primer on these areas of the face and then spread it to the rest of my face.Don’t try and skip this step! Your face will be looking like a greaser if you don’t!

Becca Ever-Matte Powerless Priming Perfector

This primer is my absolute FAVORITE for my oily skin. The texture is very stick and dries very quickly on your face, making your face feel very tight. This may be an uncomfortable feeling, however, this guarantees that your makeup will stay in place for the entire day! If you have extremely oily skin like me or need to have your make up last the entire day and night, you should have this in your make up kit stat! I admit, this is a pretty pricey product for only 1.35 flz ounce but a using a little bit on your face will go a long way. On the bright side it fulfills the TSA requirement for fluid ounces to travel with 🙂

Rimmel Stay Matte Primer $6.99 0.9 fl. oz

If you’re on a budget, this primer would probably be best for you! This primer has all the perks of a high end primer but without the hefty price tag. This lightweight formula blends easily and helps keep you looking matte all day long.  For 0.9 ounces the price isn’t so bad!

IMG_0176.JPG
Urban Decay De-slick Makeup Setting Spray Oil Control $30.00

This personally, is my holy grail primer! Unlike the other two products I listed, this is a skin mist that you spray before and after you put on your makeup. Mist on this weightless spray helps to control oil, deflect surface shine and  makeup stay put. Whenever I feel like my face is looking extra greasy I spray this on and not only does it have leave a cold refreshing feel to my face, I look more matte. I have used about 6 bottles of these for the past 2 years!

FOUNDATION!

Now for the good stuff. Here are my top foundations for oily skin:

s1465327-main-zoom.jpg
Estee Lauder Double Wear $38

This award-winning foundation, long-wear, 15 hour foundation, medium coverage is definitely THE foundation all oily girls and boys should have.  It looks flawless and natural on the skin and lasts through heat, humidity, non-stop activity. This foundation is perfect for a long summer day!

tumblr_inline_o3l4cuTyFE1qewsx0_540.jpg
MAC Studio Fix Fluid $38.00

Studio Fix Fluid is for sure a classic foundation. I personally go to this foundation for important from parties, concerts, and fancy events. When pictures are being taken, this is the foundation I go for every time. The foundation also has an SP15 which is great to protect against skin damage!

2283481.jpeg
L’Oreal Paris Infallible Pro-matte 24 hr foundation $12.99 1 fl. oz

And of course if you’re on a budget, this foundation is the great for oily skin. Even though, I don’t believe this foundation lasts for 24 hours, it definitely does the trick. For the low price it’s definitely worth the money.

Tips for oily skin foundation:

  1. Make sure the foundation doesn’t run! Test this by putting a small amount on the back of your hand a rotating your hand. If the foundation is running a little too fast, it means your foundation probably won’t last on your already oily fast. Pick a foundation that sticks to your hand or runs only a little bit.
  2. If it dries to a powder, and is more “heavy” the  foundation is probably the best one for oily skin.
  3. Try to look for foundations that says “matte” or “long lasting”.

Dry Skin

Usually older people will have this type of skin type , however, I know during the winter I can have insanely dry skin or dry patches on my face. These foundations will help fake a healthy glow, making you appear less dull. These foundations are also moisturizing and light  which can ease irritated skin.

s1359553-main-hero.jpg
Luminous Silk Foundation by Giorgio Armani 1fl oz. $62

This is by far the most popular foundation, as well as my favorite, for dry skin and has had the whole makeup world raving since its release. It has a very hefty price tag and the foundation is full coverage, so I’d probably only use this foundation for special occasions.

web_bornthisway_composite_groupofthree.jpg
Too Faced Born This way Foundation 1 fl oz. $39

This foundation is especially unique since it contains hyaluronic acid, is oil free, has alpine rose to brighten skin’s elasticity, and coconut water to hydrate and moisturize the skin. I find that this foundation also works on oily skin, so I can use this in the summer and winter! This is also medium-full coverage so you can wear this on an everyday basis or build it up to use for important events.

Unknown.jpeg
Neutrogena Healthy Skin 1 fl. oz $13.99

Neutrogena Healthy Skin is a great foundation for those who have dry skin because it leaves a natural healthy glow, with an SPF of 20 to help protect your skin from sun damage. The formula also has a special antioxidant blend that helps nourish your skin from the elements. This foundation is also found in your local drugstore, and it relatively cheaper than most foundations.

Tips for Dry Skin Foundation

1. Pick a foundation that usually says “luminous” or “hydrating”

2. Choose a foundation with moisturizing effects. This will help ensure that your foundation feels comfortable on your skin as well as looking flawless.

3. Preferably choose a foundation that is light. Heavier foundations will cling to your dry patches making your face look “cakey” and can also feel quite uncomfortable.
